The layout will model an actual location a few hundred yards south from Leicester Central station as it was in British Railway days between 1948 and 1963. The layout measures 30 feet x 14 feet, based on the ex Great Central route a few hundred yards south of Leicester Central station in the period 1948 to 1963 so BR and ex LNER, LMS, SR and GWR stock will be seen along with the two named trains, the Master Cutler and the South Yorkshireman. As a result of our research we intend to model 50 trains, so extensive storage sidings are required to hold these trains for realistic timetable operation. We are delighted to be awarded a grant from Awards for All and this will enable members to construct the main control panel, to purchase point motors for the storage sidings and to install fluorescent lighting units. Much research has been done to accurately show the railway structures and buildings, and the adjoining section of the town. Very few of these buildings still exist 75 years later. Due to having to for-shorten the ends of the layout, some town buildings have had to be omitted or reduced in size. A section of the Kennet and Avon canal, which runs close to the railway immediately east of the town, has also been modelled. " />

Tips on fitting Kadee couplings to UK stock

Monday 28 August 2006: Tips on fitting Kadee couplings to UK stock

While a NEM type Kadee could be easily screw fitted to the tension lock mount on the tender the intended use of the loco on an end to end layout caused a need for a front coupling. This was solved by adopting a NEM type Kadee in the same manner as that fitted to its tender, cutting the NEM prongs off and with the help of plenty of epoxy resin gluing it, with a screw to act as an extra glue contact area, to the rear of the bufferbeam." />

The tender was easily dealt with by use of a NEM coupling in the manner shown at the top of this page (NEM mounts have now been adopted by Hornby). Again a front coupling was needed but while a NEM coupling screw fitted to the tension lock fixing hole on the bogie worked it would not allow for the fitting of the front steps as the swing of the bogie caused the rigid plastic shank of the NEM Kadee to knock the steps off the loco. Once again it was a long 40-series Kadee that solved the matter. First glue a piece of 20 thou plastic card on top of the bogie between the cast front wheel springs taking care not to get glue on the axle to the front wheels. Then refit the bogie. Now assemble a Kadee 46 trimming off the side screw mounting holes and the front lip on the draft box lid.Once the plastic card is fixed firmly lightly spread some contact liquid polystyrene glue (ie Humbrol not MekPak) on it and the bottom of the assembled Kadee 46. Slide the Kadee 46 into place ensuring that the knuckle is postioned appropraitely taking the buffers into account.Glued on top of the bogie the sprung shank is not strong enough to knock the steps off once they have been glued in place with a strong epoxy resin." />

Bachmanns own EZmate couplings have a NEM version that is cheaper than the Kadee types, however the EZmate is fixed with no centring spring and for stock requiring a lot of uncoupling the Kadee NEMs are far more reliable. The EZmate is suitable for coupling Mk1s together as coach rakes tend to be fixed. For the outer couplings on a rake of coaches an EZmate coupling can be adopted in the following manner, and the same could be carried out with the Kadee NEM type:Cut the loop off and remove the coupling hook from the tension lock coupling supplied with the Mk1. Then drill a hole through the EZmate coupling, as if it was to be screw fixed to a tension lock mount as in the Model Trains International article. The parts should look like the photo. " />

Fit the adopted coupling to the Mk1. If the adopted coupling is too high remove it from the model, unscrew the parts and reassemble with the remains of the tension lock coupling turned upside down. If the adopted coupling is too low fit an offcut of brass (from an etching) between the coupling and the bottom of the NEM mount. This is useful generally in respect of NEM mounted Kadees and can be seen protruding from the NEM mount in the photo of the adopted coupling fitted to a Bachmann Mk1 coach. If the EZmate part of the adopted coupling pivots around the bolt, loosen the bolt, apply epoxy resin and retighten. " />

It is a very small village in Gloucestershire, but it was passed by in the railway age and it never had a railway. However as is the want of many modellers we have taken licence, changed history, and given it one! Our Fossebridge is set in the late Twenties, early Thirties and is a thriving market town of some ten thousand people served by a branch line terminus, and supports among other things a dairy, a pub (of course, what else!) with the towns folk going about their daily work in the smithy, on the farms around the town, in the dairy etc Our railway as we see it at Fossebridge represents the Great Western Railway at its zenith, one might argue, and is often the case just before its fall. An organisation which filled the role of common carrier, as indeed did all railways of the day, willing and able to handle any kind of merchandise, raw material, stock; human and otherwise, from milk to coal, explosives to pigeons. The wonderful palmy days of steam, full employment on the railway and a public which could afford to travel and no leaves and no snow." />

Likewise locomotive stock represents a far wider range than one would have been likely to see at the time on a branch line! We offer the opportunity to view classes of GWR locomotives examples of which are now lovingly held in preservation hands, but some also that are now extinct! Fossebridge can now accommodate three trains simultaneously, or four with careful planning as well as longer trains than before. The layout has an eight road fiddle yard. " />

The layout was originally constructed as an elongated letter J with a shed, turntable and station approaches. This area survives but an extra three boards have been added making the layout 46 feet long. It is 2'6" wide. There is an additional 6 inch wide bolt-on scenic road section which fits in front of the station. Little of the original alignments remain although those who know where to look can see the nostalgic remains of the original tunnel, a plafform face and Brians bridge! The new station complex includes structures from the original layout including the signal box which is based on the one at Fairford station. New structures have been constructed on the platforms that conform to typical Great Western practice and a new carriage shed can be seen behind the up platform. The structure is based on the one at Helston. The larger station has required the signalling arrangement to be altered and amended. GWR pattern lower quadrant signals have been built from the excellent Scale Signal Supply range. " />

From the right came trains heading North and trains from the left were heading South. You would have arrived by train or the A6 - no motorway existed (yet). Tebay is situated in the beautiful but wild and remote Lune valley in the Cumbrian hills. It often rains and the winds frequently blow down Tebay Gorge or down from the high fells. You would have been fortunate, the summers day was fine and visibility good. In between the passing trains and shunting movements all you would have heard is the bleating of sheep. The West coast main line stretched before you in both directions. Looking as far as you could see to the south, the line crossed the river Lune on a girder bridge immediately prior to throwing off a loop on the down line. The loop was well used, principally by goods trains, to avoid delaying following faster freight or passenger trains." />

Over 40 trains ran on the layout, all individually researched and modelled as running in our chosen time period. Some individual locomotives were not necessarily those which ran through Tebay at the time but were representative of their class. We were criticised for running trains too fast for visitors to see properly and for running too slow on occasions! Express trains ran down Shap and through Tebay at up to 90mph and Northbound passenger trains not requiring a banker were also moving quickly to get a run at the bank. In order to try to please as many people as possible some trains were ran at (our interpretation of) scale speed assuming a clear line while others slowed for signals!. " />
